After David Morse graduated from high school in 1971, Morse studied acting at William Asper Studios. He began his acting career in theater in the early 1970s as a Boston Repertory Theater Player. In the mid-1970s Esquire Joukem, artistic director of the Boston Repertory Theatre, created The Point! In which an 18-year-old Morse played the role of Oblio. He spent some time in the theater community in New York in the early 1980s before moving into television and film. In 2011, Morse won the Best Actor Award at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for his role in Allied. He played a former CIA agent in the film World War Z (2013). He played the late NFL player Mike Webster in the autobiographical drama Chetna.

He played Mike Olshansky, a former Philadelphia police officer in 2002. Joe Morse became a cab driver in the television film ‘Hack’. The film was so well received that a television series was made with the same name. For his role in the 2002 crime-drama film Shuang Tong. Morse was nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Horse Awards. Which was the first nomination for an English-speaking actor. In 2008, Morse portrayed George Washington in the HBO miniseries “John Adams”. For which his nose was enlarged.
