Froggett was born and raised in the village of Littlebeck, North Yorkshire. Her parents, Ann and Keith Froggatt, after running a corner shop, started a rare breed sheep farm on a small farm near Whitby. Joan compares the setting of her childhood to Emily Bronte’s classic novel Wuthering Heights. Froggatt initially joined a drama group in Scarborough and then left his family home at the age of 13 to attend Redroof’s Theater School in Maidenhead, Berkshire.

In 1996, Froggatt made her TV debut in the long-running ITV drama The Bill, and soon after played teenage mother Zoe Tattersall in Coronation Street. He left the program in 1998 when his character was written out. In 1999, she appeared in the first four episodes of the first series of the prison drama Bad Girls, playing Rachel Hicks, a teenage mother.
In 2003, Froggatt played the lead role in the controversial one-off drama Daniel Cable: Eyewitness, based on the true story of a teenage girl who kills her boyfriend in an iconic road rage attack.
