Pompeo received his master’s degree in engineering management in 1986. He was a classmate of Brian Bulatao and Ulrich Breckbahl. Who later helped him in the discovery of Thayer Aerospace.
Pompeo served as an armored officer in the US Army from 1986 to 1991 with the 7th Cavalry in the 2nd Squadron, 4th Infantry Division, based in West Germany. He served as a tank platoon leader before becoming an executive officer of the cavalry and then as a squadron maintenance officer.
Pompeo had left the US Army with the rank of captain.
