Ronald Wayne Career

Ronald Wayne started his first business selling slot machines in 1971. The company had failed, as Wayne reflected in 2014. “I realized very quickly that I had no business. I was better off working in engineering.”

Ronald Wayne built an internal corporate documentation system on his three-year balcony in 1976. where he met colleagues, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. Wayne invites the two to his home for convenience and advice to help resolve one of his uniquely in-depth discussions about computer design and the future of the industry.

Over the next two hours of chatting about technology and business, Jobs proposed setting up a computer company under himself and Wozniak’s leadership. Each of them will have a 45% stake, so Wayne will have a 10% stake in his decisions to act as a tie-breaker.

As a self-described “adult in the room” venture, at age 41, Ronald Wayne wrote a partnership agreement. And all three founded Apple Computer on April 1, 1976. Wayne was the first to draw the Apple logo and wrote the Apple I manual.

Ronald Wayne’s business acumen was already risk-averse due to his experience of a “very painful” failure in his slot machine business five years earlier. A loan that he voluntarily repaid for one year. Jobs won a credit of US$15,000 to purchase product materials for Apple’s first order placed by The Byte Shop.

Whose reputation as a notoriously slow-paying salesperson made Wayne very concerned about his future. Legally all members of the partnership are personally liable for any debts incurred by any partner.

Unlike Jobs and Wozniak then 21 and 25 Wayne had personal assets that potential creditors could potentially seize. His passion was mainly in product engineering and slot machines. Not in the documentation systems they believed Jobs and Wozniak might have wanted to do at Apple indefinitely.

He had left the company to avoid “standing in the shadow of the giants” of product-design talent and to avoid financial risk. He returned to the registrar’s office 12 days after Wayne wrote the document that created Apple, leaving his role at the company.

So on 12 April 1976, he gave up his equity in exchange for US$800. Steve Wozniak has disputed the term. who said in an interview that Ronald Wayne had left the company a few months later.

After leaving Apple

Shortly after leaving Apple, Ronald Wayne resisted attempts to bring Jobs back. Lived on the balcony till 1978. That’s when he joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and later an electronics company in Salinas, California.

Ronald Wayne soon ran a stamp shop in Milpitas, Calif., in the late 1970s. It was called the Wayne Stamp Collection. Wayne moved his stamp operation to Nevada after several break-ins.

It was the same base as the original logo for the Apple computer that he designed. He was again approached by Steve Jobs as a business liaison for Apple.

But Wayne also turned down an offer to buy Jobs’s friend’s company. Ronald Wayne’s theory was that Apple should have retained ownership under a special license rather than selling it to a friend. But instead of taking a direct decision later, apologies for blocking the contact.

Wayne sold the original Apple partnership agreement in the early 1990s. Which was signed by Jobs, Wozniak, and himself in 1976 for US$500. The contract was sold at auction in 2011 for $1.6 million. Wayne never owned an Apple product until 2011. When he was given the iPad 2 at an updated conference in Brighton, England. He holds a dozen patents.
