Green Day is an American rock band formed in 1987 in

the East Bay of California by lead singer

guitarist Billy Joe Armstrong and bassist

backing vocalist Mike Durant. For most of

the band's career, they have been a trio

with drummer Trey Kool, who replaced John Kifmeyer in

1990 before recording the band's second studio

album, Kerplank (1991). Touring guitarist Jason White became 

2012 but returned to his touring role in 2016

Before taking their current name in 1989

Green Day was called Sweet Children

they were part of Bay Area punk in

the late 1980s/early 1990s. A view emerging from

The band's first release was with an

independent record label Lookout! The record

was released in 1994 by their main-label debut

Dookie, by Reprise Records, which became

breakout success and eventually the U.S
